Course Descriptions
You will find a variety of Spanish practical, student-oriented courses offered at Western. Some of these courses are required for majors, others may count as electives in Humanities at Western or other colleges. You can check the list of courses in the suggested program.
SPAN 1010
First Year Spanish I
This beginning level course introduces the fundamentals of grammar, composition, conversation on and reading. (Offered fall only on-campus)
NOTE: A student who has successfully completed two years or more of high school Spanish with a “B” or better should not enroll in this beginning class.
Prerequisite: None
SPAN 1020
First Year Spanish II
This course offers the fundamentals of grammar, composition, conversation and reading. (Offered spring only on campus)
Prerequisite: SPAN 1010 or successfully completion of two years of high school Spanish or the equivalent.
SPAN 1050
CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH I
This beginning level course offers the fundamentals of basic conversation in Spanish.
Prerequisite: None
SPAN 1060
CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH II
This course continues to develop and enhance basic conversation in Spanish.
Prerequisite: SPAN 1050, or SPAN 1010, or instructor permission.
SPAN 1070
Spanish for the Health Care Personnel
This course is designed for students and professionals in the health-care field. The course focuses on the communication skills and the specialized vocabulary needed to be able to communicate effectively with Hispanic patients. The student will also learn about cultural differences, which need to be considered when communicating with someone from a different country.

SPAN 1075
SPANISH FOR TRAVELERS
This course will introduce the beginning student to the skills needed to be able to communicate
orally in Spanish during their travels. The student will also learn about cultural differences,
which need to be considered when traveling in a Spanish-speaking country.

SPAN 1080
Spanish for Law Enforcement
This course is designed specifically for law enforcement personnel with the overall goal of adequate comprehensive communication in Spanish. This course will focus primarily on verbal communication in forms of commands, questions,and dialogue in work-related settings. Certain aspects of Hispanic culture will also be studied for a better understanding of the the culture and language.

SPAN 2030
Second Year Spanish I
This course includes grammar review and study, composition, conversation and reading of short stories, dramas and poems. (Offered Fall only on campus)
Prerequisite: SPAN 1020 or successful completion of three years of high school Spanish or the equivalent.
SPAN 2040
Second Year Spanish II
This course includes grammar review and study, composition, conversation and reading of short stories, dramas and poems. (Offered Spring only on campus).
Prerequisite: SPAN 2030 or successful completion of four years of high school Spanish or the equivalent.
