Dear Rock Springs Residents,

I want to make you aware of a very important upcoming event -- the 2010 Census. The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census, or count, of all persons living in the country once every ten years. The last census was conducted in the year 2000 and placed the population of Rock Springs, Wyoming at 18,708.

In March, the 2010 Census will begin and census forms will be mailed or hand delivered to all addresses within the City. When you receive your census form, please complete it and return it. It is vital that every person living in the City be counted because the amount of federal and state funding the City receives depends upon how many residents we have. The more people who respond to the 2010 Census, the more money the City receives for schools, roads, housing, sidewalks and other infrastructure.

At the heart of the 2010 Census is the 10-question 2010 Census form. The 2010 Census form is one of the shortest census forms in history and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Households will be asked to provide key information, including: whether a housing unit is rented or owned; the address of the residence; and the names, genders, ages, races and relationships of others living in the household.

By law, the Census Bureau cannot share answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities. No court of law, not even the President of the United States, can access your individual census questionnaire responses.

Once you receive your census form, simply complete it and return it in the postage-paid return envelope provided. Responding immediately to the 2010 Census form is the most efficient way to complete the census. Census workers will visit households that do not return the forms to take a count in person.
